I Am Not My Hair?

BY – Raen Parker Washington

I love the way my hair spirals from the roots to the ends, scented with coconut and peppermint oils and shea butter.

I love the way shampooed, springy locks bounce back into crown coils.

I love the way the afro comb’s wide-gap teeth part my hair, allowing oils from ancient times to flow along and into my brown scalp.

I love the way the hairs at the nape of my neck form perfect rings.

I love the way bold black strands bow to the gentle grey, giving way to ombré.

I love the way an updo brings mama’s rememories: I like your hair away from your face.

I love the every kind of way hair puffs, twists, plaits, cornrows, curls, Bantu knots, pixies, smooths, fro hawks, contours, updos, beads, bangs and bobs—from edges to nape: Crown.
