When the opportunity to revisit Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms came my way, I knew it would be special — but I had no idea just how unforgettable it would be. This time, I brought along my eldest granddaughter, Michelle, for a magical Sweet 16 celebration at the Sweetgrass Inn at Wild Dunes Resort. From sunrise strolls to indulgent dinners, the experience was equal parts luxurious, relaxing, and joyfully memorable.

We kicked off our stay exactly how you should at a beachside resort — with bare feet in the sand. The sunrise greeted us with pink and golden hues as we walked along the shoreline, snapping pictures that will forever be cherished: Michelle cupping the rising sun in her hand, coffee in mine, and the soft waves lapping at our feet. It was the perfect beginning to a celebration of life, love, and new memories.
After soaking in the morning calm, we explored one of Sweetgrass Inn’s two oceanfront pools. Lounge chairs, cool drinks, and ocean breezes made for the ideal post-beach recharge. The ambiance is effortlessly relaxing, with attentive staff keeping everything pristine and peaceful.
Our spa experience at Sweetgrass Spa was truly next level. We started with calming facials — though “calming” doesn’t quite do them justice. Think: blissfully soothing, expertly done, and utterly rejuvenating. The infrared sauna followed, melting away any remaining stress. Then, wrapped in plush robes, we cozied up in gravity chairs in the serene relaxation room, complete with relaxation goggles and a sense of total escape.
The Spa Garden was a hidden gem — we had a private cabana stocked with cucumber water, a house-made pineapple lemonade blend, and icy towels perfect for cooling off in the summer sun. Before leaving, I indulged in the Vitamin C rain shower, a refreshing way to end our spa journey and prepare for the evening ahead.
Dinner that night at Oyster Catcher was an experience in itself. We began with their signature King Crab Bisque, theatrically poured tableside over a crab hushpuppy and lumps of fresh crab meat. It was a decadent, dreamy start.
Next up: Pork Bao Buns that were soft, savory, and a brand-new favorite for Michelle. But the dish that truly stole her heart? The Wagyu Sando — a perfectly crisp, indulgent introduction to wagyu beef that she declared her new favorite. The meal concluded with a trio of desserts for her Sweet 16, including a chocolate peanut butter mousse that was so good, we were playfully fighting over the last spoonful (if she hadn’t been the birthday girl, I might not have shared!).
A quick shoutout to the grilled bread served at dinner: buttery, crusty perfection. Honestly, I could have made a meal out of that alone.
Another evening, we dined at Coastal Provisions, where the ambiance was warm and inviting — soft lighting, individual table lamps, and a peaceful setting that felt like a true escape. We began with the chef’s special appetizer: thinly sliced jamón (referred to as the “Wagyu of ham”) served with in-house ricotta, truffle almonds, and crusty bread.
The chef also surprised us with a special bite of halibut in an orange butter sauce that I can only describe as “chef’s kiss.” That sauce could win awards.
Michelle ordered a perfectly cooked filet mignon with potato mousse and tender carrots, while I chose the catch of the day — halibut again, in that magical orange butter sauce. Just when we thought it couldn’t get better, a birthday dessert board appeared, complete with warm beignets, chocolate truffles, and coconut bites, candle and all.
While we only had time to sample two of the incredible restaurants on property, Wild Dunes offers several other dining options that are calling our names for the next visit. Places like Hudson’s Market, Laughing Gull, Taco’s and Tequilla poolside food truck and the roof top bar, The Nest offer a wide range of menus and atmospheres — from casual bites to upscale eats. There’s truly something for every palate.
One of the highlights of our stay was getting out on the water with a paddleboarding excursion. Gliding across the inlet waters, surrounded by peaceful nature and gorgeous scenery, was the perfect mix of adventure and serenity. It gave Michelle a chance to try something new and reminded me how special these little moments of discovery can be.
To top off the celebration, I worked with Pop and Palette, a local balloon and party styling company, to surprise Michelle with a balloon arrangement waiting in our room. Her face lit up when she walked in to see the colorful celebration set up just for her. It was a small touch that made a big impact, and a wonderful way to kick off her Sweet 16 in style.
What stood out just as much as the food and the setting was the staff at Sweetgrass Inn. Every person we encountered was smiling, welcoming, and genuinely seemed to love what they do. From housekeeping to waitstaff, spa attendants to groundskeepers, the energy was positive and warm — a reflection of thoughtful management and team pride.
And speaking of the grounds — spotless. I often rise before the sun, and every morning, I saw staff already out cleaning, prepping, and caring for the resort like it was their home.
This wasn’t just a Sweet 16 trip — it was a Sweetgrass memory, one that Michelle and I will treasure forever. As a travel writer, I visit many places, but few leave me feeling this pampered, relaxed, and well-fed. We’ll be back — and next time, I’m bringing the entire girls’ trip crew.
