Finally, summer’s heat, humidity, and drought are behind us, and the watercraft and tailgating stuff are being stored for 2025. The air is filled with sounds of Christmas music and the aroma of favorite family recipes. That nip in the air is palpable. “Who’s naughty and who’s nice” is being taken seriously. Here’s my tribute to what’s looming in the Upstate this month.
Fall eased into December, slowly,
like a shortline freight train
creeping into Anderson. Lake
Hartwell’s winged creatures
have flown southward, squirrels
have hunkered deep inside their
nests, and darkening trees now
pose naked since whipping winds
cast their fall wardrobes about.
Now old man winter’s coming,
bringing his unique music, magic,
and spiritual renewal.
