You’re driving by 3401 Clemson Boulevard and notice that where Denny’s Restaurant stood, the building is now all white with a big “Metro Diner” sign at the top. Yes, Metro Diner, the fast-growing restaurant serving award-winning, crave-worthy comfort food from breakfast to dinner opened for business in Anderson on Monday, June 9th.
Owned and operated by Justin Sheffield, the diner seats 114 guests and has ample, close parking. “We’re excited to welcome Anderson locals to our table and proud to be the only Metro Diner within a two-hour drive in any direction,” said Sheffield. “Whether you’re craving fluffy waffles or a savory omelet for breakfast, a juicy burger for lunch, or a plate of tender baby back ribs for dinner, our menu has something for every appetite.” Signature favorites are Scramble Bowls, Shrimp & Grits, Iron City Meatloaf, and the famous Fried Chicken & Waffles. And they offer 10% off to uniformed first responders and active or retired military members.
My wife, Anne, and I had lunch there at noon, on June 10th, their second day of operations. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted and observed a lively vibe going on among the diverse gatherings of friends and families in the full house. Technology enabled efficient communication and coordination of table bussing and setup, meal ordering, meal delivery, and bill payment without customers feeling rushed. Electronic wall screens posted the daily specials.

Anne ordered the Bissell breakfast of eggs, grits, bacon, and a biscuit. I had planned to try a mouth-watering burger, but the cookie butter pancake special changed my mind. As usual, we shared a few bites from each other’s order. Here is a combined review of our experience:
- Portions: large; you’ll likely need a take-home box
- Menu Variety: impressive; regular, lighter, and signature fares – plus 23 side items
- Service: excellent and friendly; well-trained wait staff
- Taste: thick bacon, biscuits, hashbrowns, and pancakes were exceptional; sweet tea was sweetened to perfection. Their coffee was above average but not exceptional for a dark roast lover.
- Overall meal value: Excellent
Will Anderson locals love Metro Diner and want to return often? We say YES. Also, Metro Diners will be a welcome sight on trips as there are currently 63 in 12 states and a new one opening in Indian Land, South Carolina in July.
Anderson’s new Metro Diner is currently only open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily but plans to extend dinner hours in July. They are hiring for all positions and offer competitive benefits, flexible schedules, and paid vacation. Applicants can apply at www.metrodiner.com. The diner’s number is 864-428-7802.
