Giving Back: Southern Charities & Volunteering in the Upstate

The holidays in the South are more than lights, gifts, and gatherings — they’re about heart. Around the Upstate, neighbors still wave from porches, share casseroles in times of need, and remind one another that the real magic of the season is found in giving.

From feeding families to rescuing animals, Anderson County is full of organizations quietly doing extraordinary work all year long. As we count our blessings this season, it’s the perfect time to lend a hand, share a smile, and give back to the community that gives us so much.

Meals on Wheels Anderson

Every weekday, Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver not only food but also comfort and companionship to homebound seniors throughout the county. The friendly knock on the door, a quick conversation, and a warm meal can brighten someone’s entire week.

“Our volunteers are often the only person a client sees all day,” says a longtime driver. “It’s more than a meal — it’s a moment of care.”

Volunteers can help by delivering meals, assisting in the kitchen, or simply checking in on seniors who need a little extra support. Donations help keep those wheels — and hearts — rolling.

Anderson County Humane Society and/or GELA Foundation: Get Extraordinary Love, Adopted

For decades, the Anderson County Humane Society has been a lifeline for the community’s most vulnerable animals. From providing affordable spay and neuter services to running vital sheltering and feeding programs, their mission is rooted in compassion and care. The organization works tirelessly to reduce pet overpopulation, promote responsible ownership, and give countless cats and dogs a second chance at a happy life. Whether you volunteer at their clinic, foster an animal in need, donate supplies, or simply share their adoptable pets on social media, every act of kindness helps. As the team reminds us, together we can make Anderson County a place where every animal knows love and security.

Founded right here in Anderson, the GELA Foundation honors the love of rescue dogs by giving homeless pets a second chance. From foster care to adoption events, GELA connects animals with forever families while building awareness around responsible pet care.

“Every adoption is a story of hope,” says founder Lisa Marie Carter. “We see not just pets finding homes, but families growing through love.”

You can help by fostering, volunteering at adoption events, or donating to help cover medical costs and general living costs for dogs in need. Even sharing a post on social media helps these rescues reach potential adopters and supporters.

The Lot Project

Located in downtown Anderson, The Lot Project opens its doors to those experiencing homelessness, offering warm meals, showers, clothing, and — most importantly — dignity. The nonprofit’s mission is built on compassion, creating a space where everyone feels seen and valued.

Volunteers can serve meals, sort clothing donations, or simply sit and listen. The group’s philosophy is simple: “Love others today.” It’s a message that resonates deeply, especially during the holidays when many feel most alone.

United Way of Anderson County

For over 70 years, the United Way of Anderson County has united neighbors, businesses, and local nonprofits to meet critical needs — from education to housing and health. Their programs touch lives across every age and stage, helping children learn, families find stability, and seniors stay connected.

One of their most popular programs during the holidays is Adopt-a-Family, where individuals and businesses sponsor gifts or necessities for local families in need. It’s a beautiful way to make Christmas morning a little brighter for someone else.

Giving back doesn’t always mean grand gestures. Sometimes it’s the smallest kindnesses that make the biggest difference.

Here are a few easy ways to spread cheer this season:

Donate a coat or blanket to local drives through churches or schools.

Adopt or foster a pet from an Anderson-area rescue.

Send a handwritten note to a veteran or senior living alone.

Drop off nonperishable food items at your neighborhood pantry.

Volunteer as a family — let kids help pack meals or serve cocoa at a charity event.

In the Upstate, generosity isn’t seasonal — it’s a way of life. It’s in the church bake sale that raises money for a neighbor’s surgery, the scout troop collecting canned goods, and the volunteers who show up rain or shine.

As you plan your holiday gatherings this year, consider setting a place at your table for kindness. Whether it’s delivering meals, donating coats, or walking dogs for a rescue, each act of giving keeps the spirit of Anderson shining bright.

Because here in the South, we know that when one of us gives, we all grow richer.
